Emerson College announces the appointment of Brent Smith, Ph.D., as the new Chair of the Department of Marketing Communication in the School of Communication. He will assume the role in fall 2019 at the start of the new academic year. Smith is an innovative scholar and academic whose expertise spans multiple areas of marketing, including strategy, analytics, international, consumer experience, and ethics, which will be integrated in the department’s curriculum, including the new Digital Marketing and Data Analytics program. Smith joins Emerson College from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where he served as professor of marketing at the Erivan K. Haub School of Business.
“Dr. Smith brings a wealth of experience to Emerson College, from scholarly research to his business acumen, which will greatly enhance the academic experiences of our students and strengthen the marketing communication curriculum. On behalf of faculty, staff and students, I am thrilled to welcome him to Emerson College this fall,” said Dean Raul Reis.

Smith is an expert in business education, developing several teaching innovations, such as the AISA Model and the Five Creatures Lesson, which combines game theory and multicultural paradigms to help students better understand behaviors in business. His scholarly research has appeared in several mainstream and niche peer-reviewed journals, such as Journal of Business Research, Marketing Intelligence & Planning, and Psychology & Marketing, among others. Dr. Smith has served as the editor of two multi-authored books, Global Perspectives on Contemporary Marketing Education and Mission-Driven Approaches in Modern Business Education.
Smith holds degrees from Drexel University (PhD: Marketing), Tulane University (MBA: Marketing and Entrepreneurship), and Xavier University of Louisiana (BS: Economics; BA: German).
