About
English Language Learning (ELL) supports multilingual international students in developing their English language skills and navigating academic and cultural contexts at Emerson and beyond. We celebrate our global and multilingual community while helping students hone their communication skills for academic, professional, and personal success and growth. ELL provides language assessments, courses, and programming for students, as well as training for faculty and staff in supporting international students.
English Proficiency Assessment
All students without an ELL waiver (see admissions criteria here) complete an English Proficiency Assessment. The purpose of this assessment is to identify and advance specific English skills critical to success at Emerson and beyond. Students will receive an invitation to complete the assessment remotely via Canvas before they begin their first semester of coursework. Students are strongly recommended to complete the assessment as early as possible, as the detailed feedback received upon completion is relevant to advising meetings and course selection. The English Proficiency Assessment provides ELL course placements and recommendations and helps identify which specific courses will most benefit each individual.
ELL Courses
ELL courses offer a great opportunity for students to develop English skills and confidence. All courses are free, open to currently enrolled graduate and undergraduate students, and offered through the department of Communication Studies.

Language and Culture Exploration
English Language Learning and the Office of International Student Affairs coordinate many opportunities for international students to explore language, culture, and our Boston surroundings. Our “Coffee & Conversations” are social get-togethers to enjoy drinks and snacks, meet fellow students, hear from guest speakers, and engage in English language discussion around special topics. Language Workshops provide targeted support for select academic and professional communication skills. Topics include professional writing, vocabulary, grammar, and more. Check the EmConnect website, the weekly OISA Events email, and @emersonoisa on Instagram for upcoming events.
