Several sustainability events run on a regular annual basis at Emerson. For current updates on events and sign-up information, follow the Sustainable Emerson blog. Upcoming events will also be listed on the Emerson website.
Orientation
New student orientation is a great opportunity for incoming students to learn about sustainability at Emerson. During orientation, sustainability staff are available to meet new students during a few meals, help with waste sorting in the Dining Center, and provide resources about sustainability on campus.
Clean Out Your Office Day
Once per semester, the sustainability office hosts Clean Out Your Office Day in collaboration with Eco Corps members and Archives. Faculty and staff clean out their offices and bring unused office supplies to a central location. Other employees then have the opportunity to “shop” for items they need. Everything left over gets donated to local nonprofit organizations or recycled.
We donate hundreds of pounds of office supplies every semester from these events!
Campus Race to Zero Waste
Emerson participates annually in the annual Campus Race to Zero Waste (formerly RecycleMania), a waste diversion competition between colleges and universities. Over the course of eight weeks, institutions report their trash, compost, and recycling weights and are ranked against each other in a friendly competition.
Earth Hour
Each March, Emerson participates in Earth Hour. The College joins organizations and individuals around the world in “switching off” for an hour to raise awareness about climate change. Several Emerson College buildings are included: we shut off the exterior lights at the Majestic, the Tufte Center LED stairway lights, and the banner lights at 216 Tremont, the Ansin Building, the Little Building, the Colonial Building, and the Walker Building. We encourage every member of the Emerson community to participate in whatever way they are able and to discuss the climate challenge with friends and family.
Earth Month
Every April is Earth Month. Throughout the month, several events are organized to bring attention to environmental sustainability. Student groups put together engaging activities for their peers during Earth Week and Earth Day. If you are interested in hosting an event during Earth Month, please contact sustainability [at] emerson.edu (sustainability[at]emerson[dot]edu).
Sustainable Move-Out
Moving out at the end of the school year has the potential to generate a lot of waste. Among others, Emerson partners with local nonprofit Grad Bag to keep everything out of the waste stream. Grad Bag collects donated items from colleges throughout the Boston area, stores everything for the summer, and then redistributes necessities to students in need at the start of the fall semester.
