Our Mission and Approach
Emerson College students understand wellness and healthy decision-making are central to success at Emerson and beyond.
Wellness and Health Promotion works to empower students to make informed decisions by providing the campus community with accessible, accurate health information and compassionate services that foster personal health, academic success, and community wellness.
We believe students are adults who can and will make their own decisions regarding their health. Given that understanding, we strive to create an environment in which students feel listened to and respected when discussing their health needs.
Dimensions of Student Wellness at Emerson
Physical Wellness
Physical wellness focuses on illness prevention and management through improving sleep, nutrition, sexual practices and other areas of physical health.
Questions to Ask Yourself
- Do you have enough energy to make it through the day without feeling exhausted?
- Are you physically active 20 or more minutes per day?
- Do you schedule regular health exams like with medical providers?
- Do you eat the recommended 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day?
- If you choose to use alcohol or other substances, do you use protective factors to keep yourself safe and healthy?
- If you choose to partake in sexual activity, do you practice informed decision-making, use consent, and it is safe and protected?
Emotional
Emotional wellness focuses on one’s feelings, mental health, healthy coping skills and having positive self-regard.
Questions to Ask Yourself
- Do you have an awareness of your thoughts and feelings?
- Do you have gratitude practice?
- Are you able to cope with stress?
- Do I have healthy outlets for expressing and processing my feelings?
- Are you able to adapt and adjust when changes occur?
Career Wellness
Career focuses on practicing skills used in one’s professional journey.
Questions to Ask Yourself
- Are you exploring future career opportunities?
- Do you feel passionate about your career goals?
- Are you building skills to assist in gaining your desired career?
- Am I setting boundaries around work-related tasks and taking time off when needed?
- Am I prioritizing my well-being and preventing burnout from work-related demands (ie. late film shoots, deadlines, etc)?
Community
Community focuses on one’s environment and positive relationships to people and places.
Questions to Ask Yourself
- Do I have a supportive network of friends, family, or peers?
- Do you feel like you are involved in community activities on campus?
- Do you feel a sense of belonging at Emerson?
- Are you conscious of conservation practices such as recycling, composting, reducing waste, and conserving energy?

Individual
Individual wellness focuses on the understanding of oneself through your background and lived experience.

Educational
Educational wellness focuses on engaging the mind, continually developing and applying knowledge everyday.

- Are you intentional about creating a learning environment where you and your fellow students have the space to express your views, share your insights, and hold discussions?
- Do you attend faculty members’ office hours and interact with staff and their resources?

- Am I stepping out of my comfort zone and challenging myself to grow?
Spiritual
Spirituality focuses on the recognition of a feeling or sense or belief that there is something greater than ourselves.

- Do you find it possible to make meaning of difficult circumstances?
- Do you practice compassion in your relationship with yourself and others?
- Do you partake in a practice for fostering inner peace?

Cultural
Cultural wellness focuses on having an awareness of one's own culture and how it impacts our worldview and relationships with others.

- Does your community affirm and honor your personal and social identities?

Financial
Finance focuses on economic stability, money management and making informed financial decisions.

- Do you have a personal budgeting system?
- Do you know about the financial support resources available at Emerson?
- Are you able to define basic financial terms (i.e. credit score, interest, loan details, etc)
- Am I living within my means and making informed financial decisions?
- Do I have a safety net or emergency fund for unexpected expenses?
Creative
Creative wellness focuses on your passions, emotions and thoughts often in artistic ways.
Questions to Ask Yourself
- How do you practice expressing yourself?
- What type of art is most comfortable for you to express your emotions?
- What is your favorite way to be creative?
- How can creative wellness help you in other areas of wellness?
- Do you recognize and honor other people’s forms of creative wellness?
Services
- Wellness and Health Promotion Programming: Activities and events designed to share health information, promote self-care, resources and teach important skills to stay well at Emerson and in life. If you'd like to work with Wellness and Health Promotion on a presentation or workshop, please fill out the Wellness Program Request Form and a staff member will contact you. Staff usually require at least two weeks' notice to plan events and a month's notice to accommodate presentations after 5:00 p.m.
- Wellness Coaching: Wellness coaching is a collaborative, goal-oriented and positive process that aims to strengthen your self-awareness and empower you to do what is best for your wellness. Emerson Wellness Center’s certified wellness coaches are trained to create a non-judgmental partnership and be an advocate and ally in your journey to living a well life. - Wellness Groups: Wellness groups are a casual drop-in space for fostering connection between Emerson students through shared experiences such as stress, time management, wellness topics, self-care, relationships and more.
- Student Health Advisory Board: Wellness oversees the Student Health Advisory Board (SHAB). SHAB members serve as a liaison between students and EWC administration to ensure student voices are heard and student feedback helps shape services and programming.
- Health and Wellness Educational Resources: Whether it’s doing research for a paper, film, interview or wanting to learn more individually, students can stop by our office for information. We have books, pamphlets, and other resources.
- Free Condoms and Other Sexual Health Products: Free condoms, dental dams, lubricants and other sexual health products are available at the Emerson Wellness Center (216 Tremont Street, 3rd Floor). The Associate Director of Wellness is available to answer questions about sexual health, or you can make an appointment with a clinician to discuss contraceptive options, STI testing or PreP.
- Alcohol and Other Drug Education: Emerson offers a peer-led harm reduction course called Beyond the Buzz. It addresses ways to reduce the risks associated with alcohol, cannabis and other drugs. This class is generally for first-time violations but is open to all students. Wellness also offers substance use education and resources for students who identify as in recovery.
- Sexual Health and Harm Reduction Vending Machine: Emergency contraception, My Way, is available for $10 ($10.10 with a credit card) in the vending machine in the Little Building mailroom. Open and available 24/7. There is also free sexual health and harm reduction supplies including Narcan (naloxone), condoms, dental dams, lube and more.
- Nutrition Services: Nutrition counseling appointments are available at the Emerson Wellness Center and cover a variety of topics including current diet, weight and weight history, exercise and exercise history, past medical history, and goals for best health. Contact the Center for more information on nutrition services at Emerson.
