Each year, Emerson College recognizes the outstanding efforts of our student employees by holding an appreciation week coinciding with National Student Employment Week (the second full week of April).
The purpose of this week is:
- To enhance awareness of student employment and its important role in the higher education experience.
- To recognize students who perform outstanding work while attending college.
- To thank YOU, the employer, who hires students for part-time positions and makes the student employment program such a success.
All staff members want to know that their contributions are important to the success of the department. Here are suggestions for ways to acknowledge your student staff members during National Student Employment Week and throughout the year. Be sure to tailor these ideas to fit with the culture of your department!
- Bring in treats, goodie bags, or lunch for student workers.
- Send thank you notes via email or snail mail, or send a video greeting.
- Take the time to write letters of recommendation for students who have requested them.
- Print certificates and make up silly awards for students: best telephone voice, best web-surfer, etc.
- Share encouraging and/or informational Ted Talks and facilitate conversations around the content.
- Host a check in for the group and/or for each student individually.
- Invite an office alum to speak with student employees about the work they do and how their student employment experience impacted their career.
- Decorate an office bulletin board or the office door for the week in recognition of your students.
- Use YOUR imagination. A simple THANK YOU for all you do will go a long way!
